Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali on Wednesday said she would co-chair the summit with the US vice-president Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and Rwanda President Paul Kagame.

Briefing journalists ahead of the general assembly, Ali said the US had invited the Prime Minister to co-chair the event , praising her “personal commitment to the peace and development and Bangladesh’s contribution to the UN peacekeeping”.

Hasina will leave Dhaka for New York to attend the UN general assembly on Sep 21 and a series of high-level meetings until Sep 28.

This is the first UN general assembly session after Hasina's Awami League returned to power in the Jan 5 elections and last one before the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda.

The foreign minister said a number of ministers including finance, health, expatriate welfare, forest and environment and food would join the PM’s 50-member “government delegation”.

The assembly will witness a tough debate on the proposed sustainable development goals (SDGs) which will come into force after 2015 when MDGs expire.
